Call for Royal Commission
Article Abstract:
A Royal Commission must be established in order to ensure that standards are maintained in higher education, according to trade union leaders who voted in favour of such a move at the recent TUC congress. They believe that a report could be produced relatively quickly, as most of the necessary information has already been obtained by the National Commission on Education. However, some union representatives have expressed concern at the idea of a Royal Commission, believing that unions should put their views forward directly.

100,000 pounds sterling fines for missing HEFCE deadlines
Article Abstract:
University Vice Chancellors have criticised the Higher Education Funding Council for England's (HEFCE's) plan to impose penalties of as much as 100,000 pounds sterling if they fail to meet deadlines. The Vice Chancellors believe education will suffer because of the need to spend time and money on administration. The HEFCE aims to ensure its cash distribution system is not disrupted by delays in receiving the universities' data, but opponents claim the data will be inaccurate because of the pressure of timeliness.
