Call to raise job hopes for young academics

Article Abstract:

Universities in Scotland need to take steps to improve the career prospects of young academics if they are to remain competitive in the international research sector, according to a report produced by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The report argues that, while Scotland has many selling points, including a thriving cultural scene and affordable housing, universities need to invest more in order to avoid losing researchers in the transitional stage between research contracts and permanent posts.

Prepare or risk reputation, warns journalist who exposed fraud

Universities which are unprepared to deal with cases of academic fraud risk serious damage to their reputations, according to Norman Swan, Aberdeen University medical graduate who is now a journalist and broadcaster in Australia. A key preventive measure is checking managerial competence of laboratory chiefs and making sure that research teams do not become demoralised.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) was founded 30 years ago by physicist Sir Sam Edwards and since then thousands of small businesses have benefited from the scheme which uses research expertise to improve the bottom lines of firms. The partnerships are a quiet success story of higher education and remain unknown to many academics and businesses.
