Can the spooks be spooked?
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the decision by Christopher Andrew, professor of history at Cambridge University, to write the official history of UK Security Service MI5. It is argued that it is not really possible for one person to properly tell the full story of the intelligence services in the UK. In addition, it is contended that in order to become MI5's official historian, Andrew has had to become the service's servant, whereas if he was to be properly objective MI5 would have had to become his servant.

The big picture's past, present and future
Article Abstract:
Historians' emphasis on time-and-place-specific narratives neglects the long-term aspect by not indicating the diachronic or through-time perspective of their studies. The need for Grand Narratives that provide mental frameworks that serve as locators into which people fit their own complex stories is discussed.
