Chemists fail industry's acid test

Article Abstract:

A report suggests that chemistry students and employers should form a closer relationship, with employers concerned about falling standards while students feel under pressure to appear skilled and adaptable while not expecting long-term employment. Chemistry graduates are given comparatively little time to meet their employers' requirements, such as being expected to have good inter-personal skills as well as technical expertise. Some graduates have to be trained to use modern equipment by their employer as chemistry departments have insufficient funding to purchase new equipment.

Catharsis of memories held like jewellery in a box

Article Abstract:

Author and academic Andrea Ashworth found it painful but cathartic to write vividly of her abuse as a child in 'Once in a House of Fire.' She initially attempted to write short stories but could not escape her memories of a childhood characterized by sexual and physical abuse and felt compelled to write her memoirs. She is pleased that her book is being used by teachers to reach other abused children, particularly as she had no role model herself. Her mother encouraged her to write the book, even though Ashworth portrays her abused mother as a flawed character.
