Class gap widens under Blair

Article Abstract:

The class divide in higher education in the United Kingdom widened during Tony Blair's first term as Prime Minister, according to new research conducted by Anna Vignoles of the Institute of Education and Fernando Galindo-Rueda and Oscar Marcenaro-Gutierrez of the London School of Economics. The research revealed that while all social classes were more likely to go to university during the period between 1994-1995 and 2001-2002, participation increased most rapidly amongst those from the aspirant lower-middle classes and those from affluent and professional backgrounds.

The fairer the better?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the potential downside of moves to widen social participation in higher education. It is argued that, if higher education is run as a meritocracy, then even greater social divisions could be created as meritocracies are, by their very nature, discriminatory, with those at the very top being privileged and those lower down either resigned or feeling resentment at being labeled second rate.
