Dining with death
Article Abstract:
The severe outbreak of E.coli poisoning in Scotland during Nov 1996 caused 500 cases of illness and 20 deaths and resulted in calls for reform of the food safety laws in the UK. Regulations on food safety must be enforced strictly and the regulators must be given help to stop intimidation from those being inspected. Food safety laws may be limited due to pressure from commercial enterprises particularly if there is a lack of scientific evidence to support the introduction of new regulations. Investigations into cases of infection should lead to reforms to prevent another outbreak.

Who really planted the kiss of death?
Article Abstract:
The authors of the book "Return of the Black Death-The World's Greatest Serial Killer" argue that rats were not responsible for the Black Death that swept through Europe from 1347 to 1670 and that it was not actually bubonic plague that afflicted Europe but a form of haemorrhagic plague. It is also suggested that, as more lethal diseases have appeared since 1970 - over 30 in total, than had appeared in the preceding 3,000 years, it is possible that haemorrhagic plague could reappear again.

Not just a degree but despair, damage and death, too
Article Abstract:
An examination of how the brutal experiences of Theodore Kaczynski at Harvard University helped to turn him into the Unabomber. It is suggested that the culture that Kaczynski experienced at Harvard, combined with experiments that he took part in whilst studying there helped to create the man that would, between 1978 and 1995 plant or mail bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others.
