Divisive research plan axed

Article Abstract:

Funding chiefs in the United Kingdom look set to sidestep the controversial plans for the further concentration of research that the government put forward in its higher education white paper in January 2003. The move will represent an almost total undoing of the government's plans and vindicates those, including vice-chancellors, MPs and research council, who campaigned against the proposals. All four of the nation's funding bodies are currently considering a funding plan that would have a far less divisive distinction between different degrees of research excellence.

UUK: no evidence to back research focus

Article Abstract:

The government has produced no evidence to support its plans to concentrate research funding in fewer world-class university departments at the cost of lower-rated departments, according to a study conducted by Evidence (Leeds, UK), consultancy firm, and commissioned by Universities UK. The report states that neither the Higher Education Funding Council for England or the government have put forward justification for the plans, which will simply serve to handicap UK higher education in the international arena and stunt regional economies.

Winners and losers in research cash stakes

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the funding allocations for higher education in England are examined and the winners and losers identified. Around 20,000 university researchers in England will see cash siphoned from their departments in 2003-2004 in order to top-up world-class research, with funding for 12,000 researchers in departments whose work had been rated 4 by the 2001 research assessment exercise being cut to UKPd118 mil in 2003-204, vs UKPd139 mil in 2002-2003.
