Battle of the dons of war

Article Abstract:

Many UK university professors used world War I as an excuse to criticize German academics who had made them feel medicore in the past. Oxford university professors produced 87 types of pamphlets about the war. Some were against the war effort, such as Bernard Russell who lost his fellowship at Trinity College because of his views. Economist John Maynard Keynes initially supported the war but after the death of some close friends he demanded to be registered as a conscientious objector. Some 18% of Cambridge graduates and almost 20% of Oxford graduates did not survive the war.
