Elite face cuts to teaching grant

Article Abstract:

Under proposals put forward by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, teaching grants awarded to universities offering traditional degrees will be reduced in order to finance courses favoured by the government. If the plans are approved, it will be the second consecutive year that the teaching grants received by "elite" universities will have been cut in order to support non-traditional students.

Big cuts punish poor student enrolments

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the Higher Education Council for England's (Hefce) allocation of funding to universities and colleges for 2004-2005. Hefce has allocated UKPd6 bil to 160 further education colleges and 130 higher education institutions, with UKPd3.8 bil allocated to teaching and UKPd1.1 bil allocated for research activities.

Issues concerning the funding of English universities are discussed. In particular the implications of the grant allocations for 2002 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England are examined.
