England braced for '2005 effect'
Article Abstract:
Leading colleges and universities will be forced to turn away increasing numbers of outstanding students in 2005 as they brace themselves for the "2005 effect", as up to 100,000 additional students are expected to apply for university places ahead of the introduction of top-up tuition fees in 2006. The additional students are expected to consist of gap-year students rushing to enter the system, an increasing number of students passing A-levels and hopefuls from the 10 new European Union countries who will be able to benefit from the UK's higher education system.

'I cannot see any good argument for giving indiscriminate subsidies to students from countries richer than our own. The less we do so, the better'
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the warning given by the British Council that higher university tuition fees could scare away European Union (EU) students. It is argued that instead of worrying about scaring off EU students, universities in the UK should be concentrating on attracting the best overseas students. In fact, it is suggested that as there are about 43,000 EU students currently studying at universities in the UK, it might not be a bad thing if fewer came, but that those that did come had to pay more towards getting their education.

We can't just think big, we must invest big, too
