Facing up to emotion
Article Abstract:
Emotions can be judged by human facial expressions. Paul Eckman is a psychologist who has examined expressions and argues there are six human emotions: surprise, sadness, happiness, anger, disgust and fear. These are the same for people in different cultures, though some cultures may repress their expression of emotion under certain circumstances. Emotions can help in evolutionary behavior, such as fear which helps people run. Using expressions related to emotions can make people feel those emotions, for example smiling can briefly make people feel happy.

'We have such a fear we are just a tiny twig on this arborescent bush of life.' (palaeontologist Stephen Jay Gould's views on Darwin's philosophy)
Article Abstract:
The theories put forward by Charles Darwin on the origins of man are still seen as contrary to social conventions, according to palaeontologist Stephen Jay Gould. People are still not prepared to accept that purpose and progress have no place in nature, and do not like to see the importance of humans reduced to such an extent. They cannot accept that Darwin's theory is so materialistic, denying the dualism of mind and matter. It is now time to review our attitudes to Darwin's theory.

Bred in the bone?
Article Abstract:
The new Darwinism is being explored with the back-up of empirical data. Many supporters of evolutionary biology claim that their results are used for leftist political change. Michigan University's associate professor and psychiatrist Randolph Nesse believes that psychiatric problems may offer an advantage in the survival of the fittest.
