Famous five fail to redress sexual balance

Article Abstract:

There are very few women who are heads of United Kingdom universities in contrast to the US and Australia, and compared with the United Kingdom parliament which includes many women in 1997. One reason for this lack of women may be the strength of male networks and the influence of Oxford and Cambridge universities. Appointments tend to be made by men who did not go to school with girls or to a university college with women. The problem needs to be recognised before it can be tackled.
