Fighting a fear of isolation

Article Abstract:

The question of Serbian universities has been largely ignored by those pressing for the resignation of Yugoslav Pres. Slobodan Milosevic. Government-appointed managements are increasing pressure on Serbian academics who openly disapprove of the law abolishing the autonomy of universities passed in May 1998. Serb refugee students from Kosovo are being refused admission to schools and universities in other parts of Serbia. The West is sending aid to Pristina university in Kosovo but it should help all academics and students in Serbia, irrespective of their ethnic background.

Individualism becomes the first casualty of war

Article Abstract:

A Serbian academic, working in London, England, points out how he feels both sides in the Serbian war are guilty of using propaganda to justify their behaviour. He feels the West and Serbia are wrong in what they are doing and both are using untrue information to support their actions. The academic discusses how he finds it difficult to view the war without taking reference to his own background and the problems being faced by his family and friends in Serbia. But he feels it is important as a academic to try to remain impartial.
