Food feuds: a safety issue to chew over

Article Abstract:

An examination of the structure and experience of food standards agencies in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Ireland has highlighted the need for regulation and consumer protection to be separated from agricultural and industrial sponsorship. The new food standards agency being considered for Britain must come under the aegis of the Dept. of Health, not the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The new agency should have a wide remit ranging from microbiological contamination to the environmental impact of food production and should be obliged to report to ministers and Parliament.

The sour, unsavoury taste of food standards

Article Abstract:

The new British Food Standards Agency should act for the consumer but it seems to still be involved with the concerns of the food industry. The European Union (EU) is planning to set up a body to look after food standards. It will be known as the European Food Authority which will revise previous regulations and lay down simplified rules for the EU. Yet it fails to mention the Common Agricultural Policy and the problems of food supply within the EU. The two new bodies will only have a limited role as worldwide food standards are controlled by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
