Article Abstract:
Poet Ted Hughes published his book 'Birthday Letters' in memory of his wife Sylvia Plath Hughes who committed suicide in 1963. Many admirers of Plath blamed Hughes for her death and some of his actions following her death caused him to be further vilified. A number of Plath's poems are based in fantasy whereas Hughes based many of his poems on his own experiences. The popularity of both Plath and Hughes may change following his death in autumn 1998. He will no longer be in a position to control the publication of his wife's work.
