Foreign signings plug gaps
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the management of universities in the United Kingdom are examined in an attempt to tackle the suggestion that the UK lacks the talent to lead its own universities. Some have suggested that the fact that vice-chancellors in the UK are being increasingly recruited from abroad indicates that there is a lack of suitable homegrown candidates, but others - including Ivor Crewe, president of Universities UK and vice-chancellor of Essex University - disagree, noting that vice-chancellors in the UK have always been recruited from abroad and that it is a sign of the vibrancy and strength of UK higher education that it can recruit from overseas.
