France plays drugs catch-up

Article Abstract:

Group president of French chemical giant Rhone-Poulenc Philippe Desmarescaux believes that the Bio Avenir programme he was instrumental in launching at the end of 1991 has changed the research culture within his company. Around 500 researchers in 100 laboratories took part in the 1.6 billion French franc biotechnology research programme which was designed to encourage collaboration between company and state-run laboratories. Work centred on health, agriculture, biochemistry and research into new methodologies. The programme, which ended in Nov. 1997, has already yielded nearly 200 patents.
