From academy to acropolis

Article Abstract:

Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou who lies desperately ill in the Onasseion Heart Hospital in Athens, Greece, in Dec. 1995, was a respected world-class academic economist before embarking on a political career. Papandreou's idiosyncratic brand of populist socialism embodied in the platform of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, the political party he founded in 1974, allowed him to increase his share of the vote from 13% in the 1974 election to 48% in the 1981 election. He was defeated, amid much scandal, in 1989, but bounced back to power in 1993.

The silence of the ordinances

Article Abstract:

Universities in Scandinavia are obliged to explain their reasons for making an academic appointment and also publically acknowledge reasons why they chose to reject the other candidates. Similar appointments, in the UK, are treated very informally, without set procedures. The ordinance rules, at London University, call for external experts on the appointment board but these are not required to attend interviews or be party to any appointments. On some occasions donors of university chairs are permitted to sit on appointment boards.

The empire strikes back

Article Abstract:

The war between Russia and Chechenia has been described by western politicians as an internal affair. However, it is suggested that Chechenia is no more a part of Russian than Algeria is of France, or Ireland is of Great Britain. The use of 'needle' bombs, outlawed by the Geneva convention, has not spurred western governments into action.
