Get real, top-up fees are the only option we have

Article Abstract:

The Labour MP for St Albans, England, who is also a member of the education and skills select committee, explains why he has changed his mind with regard to the need for top-up fees for universities. He argues that, having built in the necessary safeguards to protect poorer students, he now accepts that top-up fees of UKPd5,000/yr should be introduced, above the UKPd3,000/yr proposed by the UK government. He now believes that the increase in top-up fees is the best way to achieve the higher skills base the country needs if it is to remain globally competitive.

In the perfect system, only those who reap the benefits should have to pick up the tab

Article Abstract:

Politicians may be reluctant to increase taxation, but an earnings related levy is the logical solution to the funding crisis in higher education in the United Kingdom. It is argued that while the Labour Party may find the question of university funding a difficult question to answer, it is only fair and logical that those who receive the financial benefits that come from education to degree level should pay a graduate tax that would finance the running of universities.

Con we stick together and regain the lost plot?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the impact that the introduction of free-market principles to the university sector will have. It is argued that the introduction of free-market fundamentalism will turn universities into businesses supplying customers with a commodity, and the fact that people are paying for a degree will, therefore, make it harder to actually fairly assess or even fail people who may have paid large sums of money for their education.
