'Graduate glut' claim rubbished

Claims that expansion of the higher education sector will create a "glut" of graduates unable to find well-paid jobs are incorrect, according to a report on the UK's skills gap published by the Council for Industry and Higher Education. The report counters claims made by researchers from Lancaster and Cardiff universities and argues that the UK continues to suffer from a shortage of university-leavers, especially in science subjects.

Recruiting drive may gobble up pay cash

Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) figures show a 2.7 percent rise in academic staff numbers from 2003-04 to 2004-05 and most of these are senior grades. This rise threatens to swallow any extra cash to meet pay demands.
