Grief is carved in stone: Sandra Gilbert discovered the anguish behind the bland term 'medical malpractice' when her husband died after a routine operation
Article Abstract:
A women describes the events leading up to her husband's death following a routine operation and how she has reassembled, renewed and redirected her life. She recalls how a lawsuit was brought against the hospital, which although admitting no wrong, settled almost immediately. She wrote a book, Wrongful Death, describing her years of grief and the stony silence she was met with by the hospital, at attempts to seek information about her husbands death.

Troubled Vichy waters
Article Abstract:
Two films made by French film-makers made in 1993 focus on the relationship between the World War 2 Vichy government and the Nazis. The interest in this period of history has been further heightened by the trial of one of the Vichy administrators for crimes against humanity. These events occur at a time when the present French government is considering new French nationality criteria.

The night the spirit died
Article Abstract:
In 1942 Jews were deported from France in an attempt to placate the Nazis. In 1992 prosecutions against those responsible were dismissed. President Mitterand said that the present government did not recognise these actions as persecution, and no compensation has ever been awarded to the victims. Thirty-three thousand Jews were forced to leave France in 1942.
