Guidance for the gifted

Article Abstract:

There are estimates of between 140,000 and 280,000 gifted elementary students. In order to reach them, they must be first identified. Teachers should observe students' entire behavior spectrum for both positive and negative aspects. As a minority, gifted children often feel isolated and have difficulty adjusting due to their special skills. Teachers should work to integrate these children into class by providing opportunities to interact.

The hurried child

Article Abstract:

Children are rushed to achieve academic skills, such as reading. The child who fails to meet standards of machine scored group testing of level of peers is learning disabled. Factory type schools minimize individualized education. Children should be encouraged to engage in play, spontaneous self-expression, to cope with childhood stress and learn to value childhood.

A detailed discussion of how teachers could use their classroom time more effectively. It was discovered that over 40% of the day is often spent in noninstructional activities. Many examples of good and bad practices are given.
