Hope amid the corruption

Article Abstract:

Some evidence of change in the state of the Russian education system is apparent, with the start of the Open University for North Europe, lessons in politics at universities and the possibility of access to the internet. Russian students often face bureaucratic delays, poorly paid teaching staff and corruption in universities yet they still have a sense of freedom. The privatisation of industry has allowed many of those formally in power under Communism, to remain in a powerful position.

Studying amid the shrapnel

Article Abstract:

Sarajevo University is in territory controlled by the Bosnian Serbs, rendering it a no-go area, although students and professors still attend. In the rest of Bosnia, higher education is segregated along ethnic lines, and universities have been adversely affected by hyperinflation during 1993. Universities in Serbia and Montenegro operate in comparative peace, but have to face international sanctions.
