Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom may break up as a result of reforms being undertaken by the Labour Government in both national and local government, say some academics. Devolution is intended to be an alternative to total self-government, but the Scottish National Party will call for full independence from England if elected to lead the new Scottish parliament. The assemblies in Wales and Northern Ireland are also expected to pursue increased powers, while regions within England may also demand their own assemblies.
