Inflation chill for Russian academics

Article Abstract:

A meeting was held by the faculty and students of Moscow State University on July 1st 1993, protesting at the Russian government's failure to honour its promise to relate salaries to inflation. Some 1,000 people heard Igor Kotlobovsky say that the university has lost 25% of its staff over the last five years and university professors are not earning as much as cleaning ladies. University professors are paid 40,000 roubles per-month and many only survive because they take second jobs. There are currently only three million students in higher education receiving a grant of 6,000 roubles-per-month, equivalent to four pounds sterling-per-month. Some 10% of students are in financial difficulties, with around 50% working in term time and the remainder relying on family support.

Pair bear up to British life

Article Abstract:

Two Russian students from Moscow State University are at the University of North London (UNL), England, on an exchange. The UNL has a higher proportion of mature students than they are used to, and the UNL's timetable is more open than that of Russian universities, and involves working alone more. The students also see university staff as more approachable at UNL, the seminar groups are smaller, and there are more technological devices available to the students at UNL.

Article Abstract:

Moscow State University is suffering from lack of money, the state has not fulfilled its promise to devote 10% of income to education. Students from devloping countries are no longer offered scholarships, but Western fee-paying students are welcomed instead. Moscow State is 200 years old and has 20,000 students, many from overseas. Its maths and science departments are well known to the international academic community.
