Merged ministry triggers alarm

Article Abstract:

The UK governet has created a new Department for Education and Employment, merging the two departments previously responsible for these areas. Four ministers are sharing the responsibilies of employment and education issues in a move which has been criticised by the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals and the Association for Colleges. Responsibility for higher education and further education has been split despite a move to integrate the work of these two sectors.

Shephard rounds up Employment

Article Abstract:

The UK government has merged training and education, and the Employment department has been split between the Trade and Industry and the Education departments. This move will facilitate the removal of barriers between vocational and academic qualifications, and help the development of lifelong learning. The new Secretary of State for Education and Employment is Gillian Shephard, who already has experience at the department of Employment.

The UK University for Industry's (UfI) chief executive, Anne Wright, sees its learndirect pilot higher education service as complementing the new 'e-university'. Learndirect's main focus in on basic skills and further education.
