Military's might in Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The student protests in Indonesia are backed by a number of former ministers and other respected people. The students are protesting against the regime of Indonesian President Suharto. Six students were killed by the army during May 1998. Some observers fear the action may be the start of a crackdown on the students, as experienced in China following similar protests. Suharto came to power in the 1960s, with the support of the armed forces and some of the student body. The students continued to protest in the 1970s and 1980s.

The making of a president

Article Abstract:

The election of Abdurrachman Wahid, the head of a Muslim organization founded by his grandfather, as new Indonesian President will be widely welcomed both within Indonesia and abroad, where it was thought that violence could break out if B.J. Habibie had been re-elected. Muslim voters will approve of the fact that all Muslim political groupings have been united for the first time since the early 1950s. Abdurrachman's reputation for encouraging active cooperation with non-Muslims will also strengthen his position.
