Millions lost on patent
Article Abstract:
Southampton University, England, has lost hundreds of millions of pounds sterling that could have accrued as royalties, due to loose patenting. The university's Optoelectronics Research Centre discovered benefits from inserting erbium, an element, into optical fiber would boost information throughput, a discovery made in the mid 1980s. Southampton Innovations Ltd has been set up by the university to encourage technology transfer, and its managing director, Roger Ashby, sees the naivity as likely to have been involved. Universities have since become more commercial minded.
