Article Abstract:

The Voting Rights Act was amended in the mid-1970s to give proportional representation to some ethnic groups. Although this has sparked much debate, it is not considered undemocratic. Rather, the trend towards populist practices such as initiatives and referenda are seen as threats to the advancement of minorities' political rights.

Limiting racial gerrymandering: the future of black representation

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court has decided that the gerrymandering of congressional districts when race is the main factor is unconstitutional. Blacks have viewed this as a setback. However, this may be still be a blessing since blacks have proven that they can win in majority white districts.

Article Abstract:

The structure and function of the American family has undergone dramatic changes between 1960 and 1990. Single-parent families and the decline of marriage as a social obligation are just some of the changes. Implications of these changes on American society are presented.
