Murder taints 'tolerant' campus
Article Abstract:
The assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin has raised questions about the kind of education offered at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv, Israel, where Rabin's assassin, Yigal Amir, was studying law. Bar-Ilan was founded as a religious university in 1955, but regarded mutual understanding and political and religious tolerance as a basic part of its educational message. Academics are as puzzled by Amir's actions as politicians and the public since he was seen as a quiet, intense and highly intelligent law student and not as an extreme right-winger.

There are 1,200 students in 1995 compared with 11,000 prior to the start of the conflict. Schools in Afghanistan have also been reopened by the government.
