Oil on troubled waters

Article Abstract:

The North Sea oil industry has made substantial contributions to Britain's economy. In 1990, Britain was the ninth biggest oil producer. Oil revenue is expected to be 1 billion pounds sterling in 1992. It employs 100,000 in Scotland, and provides 35% of jobs in Aberdeen. Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt universities have both contributed to research projects for the industry, as has Strathclyde University. At present safety is the prime research area, possibly followed by ecological projects.

Article Abstract:

Anthropology students need to acquire a field permit from a country that they plan to spend time investigating in. Social anthropology lecturer Neil Thin spent a year in southern India, where he first stayed with the missionaries as a stepping stone into the community, which provided him with his own hut. Thin learnt Tamil before travelling out to India. Details of tips and advice from other anthropology travellers are included.
