Article Abstract:

An analysis of how the Freedom of Information Act 2000 has affected further and higher education institutions in the UK. While many had feared that the implementation of the Act would involve a great deal of disruption for the sector, the number of requests for information under the act that each institution is receiving has been relatively low, averaging 3-4/month. However, the work that is involved to fulfill these requests is placing a significant demand on resources.

Outlook: a deluge threatens

Article Abstract:

An overview of the challenges university staff face in dealing with the growing volume of e-mail they receive in the light of the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act (2000). It is contended that universities need to undertake a multi-faceted approach that combines staff training and awareness, policies and technology if they are to effectively deal with the challenges they face.
