One foot in the future

Article Abstract:

The provost and chief executive of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China describes the internationalisation of the higher education sector in China and how Nottingham University became the first foreign university permitted to establish a campus in China. It is argued that China is establishing an internationalised university system that is increasingly capable of competing in the global market in terms of research and recruitment of international students, and that UK universities cannot afford to ignore either the opportunities or threats that China offers.

Smoke, mirrors and Chinese pipe dreams

Article Abstract:

An analysis of efforts by Western universities to establish facilities and branches in China in the hope of cashing in on the growing education sector in the country. It is argued that most Western institutions do not realise that the majority of Chinese people really want a Western diploma from a Western institution, not a diploma from a Chinese imitation of a Western university.

India, both rural and urban, is a popular recruiting ground for UK universities. Around 4,000 Indian students enrolled in UK universities in 1999, rising to 12,000 in 2003 and is expected to reach 18,000 in 2006.
