Students and student life have moved from the elite to the commonplace in the last half century, Ken Roberts, professor of sociology at Liverpool University, will tell the British Sociological Association annual conference. Typically, students today have attended comprehensive schools, whereas 50 years ago students were from fee-paying schools or has passed the 11-plus exam.

An overview of the "Why Art Matters" conference, which is due to take place at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Science and Humanities in Cambridge, England, on 12 December 2005.
