Overladen with honours

Article Abstract:

Changes likely to result from the government White Paper on higher education will mean many more students and wider ranges of abilities, and to maximise results a review of undergraduate degrees is needed. Before the 60's there used to be separate honours and ordinary degree courses, the former for those aspiring to academia and the latter giving a wider education. The honours degree is now the norm and less able students have not benefited from this change. There is now a case for returning to a similarly multi-choice system of levels. Two-year degrees are also being introduced but people doing these miss out on the cultural and intellectual benefits of a longer stay at university.

A look to the future for Britain's past masters

Article Abstract:

Many students studying history at university show little inclination to write orignal and innovative work but prefer to repeat information from their required reading list. It is often chosen as a course of study because it does not require any technical ability. History students often find it difficult to express themselves in their essays which usually have spelling and grammatical mistakes. Therefore writing skills and expressive language should be encouraged. Their knowledge and understanding of history before the 20th century is limited due to history teaching schools.
