Pair may undercut pack with UKPd2,000 fee

Article Abstract:

Leeds Metropolitan University and Bradford University are considering charging top-up fees below the UKPd3,000/yr maximum that is allowed. Such a move would shatter the consensus that all institutions in the United Kingdom would inevitably charge the full top-up fee. Simon Lee, vice-chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan, states that his aim to challenge the view that lower fees would mean lower quality, however, others argue that any institution charging less than the full fee would automatically be regarded as inferior.

Blair bets all on wooing rebels

Article Abstract:

Tony Blair has staked his premiership on the Labour Party's higher education bill, repeatedly insisting that it is a key plank of his public service reform plans and that the success of his premiership will be judged on these reforms. Blair is believed to be confident that he will be able to force the reforms through, despite the fact that nearly 150 Labour backbench MPs have voiced their opposition to the introduction of variable top-up fees.
