Peter Warry: 'managing conflict is a skill that Professor Warry will need in his new role'

Article Abstract:

Peter Warry -- former chairman of Victrex PLC, former chief executive of Nuclear Electric, former member of Department of Trade and Industry's deregulation task force, and special advisor to the Margaret Thatcher government -- has been appointed chairman of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. The 52-year-old Warry, who is an industrial professor at the University of Warwick, will have to deal with membership in the European Southern Observatory and trouble at the European particle physics laboratory Cern.

Ucas Extra sparks rise in mid-year applications

Article Abstract:

The number of people applying for university places in the United Kingdom has increased, partly as a result of Ucas Extra, a service that matches candidates with available places before the start of the clearing process. As of 24 March 2003, the number of applicants had risen by 3.6% vs the year earlier period, according to figures released by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. As many as 30,000 people will be eligible to use the Ucas Extra service by July 2003.

Job boom looms as older staff bow out

Article Abstract:

Young academics in the UK could experience a boom in job opportunities the likes of which hasn't been seen for a generation, according to statistics compiled by the Higher Education Statistics Agency. The statistics reveal that many of the new universities have a high proportion of older staff which they will have to replace. The figures suggest that the new universities will be forced to replace thousands of staff.
