PhDs praise quality effort

Article Abstract:

Postgraduate students in the United Kingdom are overwhelmingly satisfied with the quality of supervision they receive, with nearly two thirds of research students so happy they are planning a career in academe, according to a survey conducted for The Times Higher Education Supplement. Students in the biotechnology and biological sciences fields were the most satisfied, giving the quality of their supervision an average rating of 7.8 out of ten. Students in the engineering and physical sciences sectors were the least satisfied, giving the quality of their supervision an average rating of 6.4 out of ten.

Students not up to it? Throw them out into the wild

Article Abstract:

Field courses should be used more with students of environmental disciplines at university in order to combat the loss of teacher-student contact that has come about as a result of the expansion of higher education. It is argued that if properly run, field courses would help students in environmental disciplines develop their thinking abilities, practical abilities and writing skills.

Article Abstract:

The role of Oxford and Cambridge Universities is examined. It is argued that Oxford and Cambridge need to take back their autonomy as academic communities and reduce the amount of interference they suffer from successive governments that have not understood what the purpose of an university is if they are to maintain their international reputations as centres of academic excellence.
