Policies behind poverty

Article Abstract:

Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel prize winning economist, is a critic of the free-market and also of George W. Bush and his policies. Stiglitz argues that the problem with Bush is that he has no real sensitivity towards civil or human rights or democratic processes and that he often does not really understand the questions with which he is faced in his role as President.

In order to protect their student aid and research funding, which totals $40 billion and $25 billion respectively, American universities are being forced to become involved in political lobbying. Higher education lobbyists supported patient advocacy groups in their fight against the religious right on the issue of embronic stem-cell research.

In the right place for the wrong reason

Article Abstract:

US President George W. Bush addressed the academic issue of embryonic stem-cell research in his first television address to the American people in September 2001, but his interest in higher education has been minimal. His administration has not yet appointed an official with responsibility for universities and colleges.
