Article Abstract:

There have been calls to reform the way that colleges at Oxford and Cambridge universities, England, are governed. The colleges are charitable bodies which are governed by fellows and head who choose undergaduate students and manage finances. They have a complex relationship with the universities involving numerous committees and a large number of regulations. They were last reformed in 1923. The two unversities receive more government money than other universities yet fail to recruit poorer students. Problems with corporate governance have been highlighted by the resignation of Sir Stephen Tumin as head of St Edmund's Hall, Oxford.

A liberal dose of happy endings

Article Abstract:

Francis Fukuyama, essayist and former State department scientist, wrote 'The End of History,' wherein he argued that liberal democracy was the only realistic and legitimate path and ideology left to mankind. The subsequent collapse of east European communist governments increased belief in Fukuyama's theory. His argument continued that, without political ideals to struggle towards and with no demanding sacrifices to be made, mankind would become bored and ultimately collapse through lack of motivation. The theory has been attacked with equally theoretical and highly unlikely counters.

Acceptable faces of a nation

Article Abstract:

The British Academy is to provide Oxford University with 250,000 pounds sterling for them to carry out a complete revision of the Dictionary of National Biography. The present Dictionary is in two parts. The first is to 1900 and consists of 22 volumes. The second part covering the 20th century is in nine volumes produced between 1901 and 1985. The editor has not yet been decided upon. It is expected the new edition will contain more women, fewer church personalities and more scientists. There is much more information available than there was for the original.
