Reactor sideline sheds light on possible cancer cure
Article Abstract:
The Joint Research Centre's Boron Neutron Capture Therapy centre in Petten, Netherlands, may ultimately offer a cure for cancer. The facility uses the most advanced technology but its costs are small in comparison with the Ecu1,140 million absorbed by the Joint Research Centre. The facility aims to develop a better treatment for malignant brain cancers than radiotherapy, although research is still in progress. The light metal boron is incorporated in the new BSH drug treatment, with the boron concentrating in the brain tumour and ultimately killing cancerous cells without side-effects.

Can spin-outs reap returns
Article Abstract:
Speakers at a conference encouraged academics to use their innovative ideas to start their own businesses. One of the speakers at the conference was Science Minister Lord Sainsbury. Some speakers pointed out spin-out companies seemed to work best when the academics left running the business to the professionals. Others suggested academics could work as consultants. Isis Innovation Managing Director Tim Cook pointed out although universities could make money from spin-outs they can take time to develop. One spin-out, Oxford Asymmetry, is valued at over 150 million pounds sterling.
