Sell atoms, hire bits

Article Abstract:

An electronic market for research is due to be developed by the European Union using the Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project that brings electronic commerce to learning and teaching. IMS is reportedly due to become the standard for much of the European Union's 11 billion pounds sterling Fifth Framework research initiative. The software allows academics to charge users for access to 'objects' such as virtual-reality lectures or course notes. Some academics are concerned about being replaced by software, however, and believe education will become less diversified.

Faster, wider, deeper...

Article Abstract:

New Ukerna Chief Executive Geoff McMullen welcomes the fact that there is a strong link between the company as a supplier of the JANET academic network and the community it services. There are now more than 100 further education colleges connected to JANET, along with around 70 schools. McMullen believes that there are opportunities for Ukerna to outsource central management of metropolitan area networks, along with local area network services within institutions. He also believes that there is a strong potential market for the provision of routine, standardized content.

Greetings from the twilight zone

Article Abstract:

There is concern in the academic community that some researchers without access to computer networks may be losing out on vital information. A US network called Internet was developed from a defence department project, and now has an estimated seven million users. Some observers feel using such networks will influence communication as much as the printing press. The speed of access to information using networks is emphasised, giving researchers a head start in their work.
