Semesters handicap students

Article Abstract:

Research carried out at the law facility, Southampton University, England, has shown that semesterization is linked to higher failure rates for students, compared to the traditional academic year. Modularization is a development which involves breaking courses into units to be examined within the semester timetable. Liverpool University's education professor, Alan Smithers, notes that there has been disruption to the university year since not all institutions use semesterization, introduced in response to fears of the impact of an increase in student numbers.

New managers evaluated

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Economic and Social Research Council has suppoted research on university management by Lancaster University's Rosemary Deem. Deem studied job advertisements for senior posts, and found the language describing skills needed to be revealing. Head hunting agencies are often used to fill such posts. There are potential problems in applying commercial techniques to academic environments, such as a possible bias against women, and the need to focus on staff employed in institutions as well as consumers in general.
