Snatched in Sudan, captive in Khartoum
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the growth in trafficking in human beings, which is estimated by the United Nations to be worth between US$7 billion/yr to US$10 billion/yr, and ways in which the trade can be combated. It is suggested that in order to combat the trade in people, we need to understand the global nature of the problem, create civil society networks, develop norms and recruit people that are willing to promote them, create a global law-declaring body that can develop international laws against trafficking and then ensure that these laws are enshrined in the judicial systems, executive practices and domestic statutes of all countries around the world.

Unsafe havens
Article Abstract:
US policy toward Haitian refugees illustrates the importance of considering the effect immigration policy has on the decision to emigrate. A restrictive policy that does not effectively differentiate between political and economic refugees will tend to discourage people from emigrating even when they have a reason to fear persecution. This is because political refugees who are repatriated face a greater risk of persecution than if they had never left. Therefore the risks of both wrongful discouragement and erroneous prompting of emigration should be considered as factors in immigration policy.
