So what do you do, Mr Major?

Article Abstract:

The role of the UK prime minister has changed since the 1940s. Prime ministers usually lead their own parties, parliament and the executive. Debates as to the relative power of the prime minister and Cabinet have occurred throughout this period. The functions of the prime minister have greatly increased since the 1940s and this means that there is a strong case for the Cabinet being alloted more power. Performance related pay for the Cabinet has been rejected but could be implemented.

Our noble cause

Article Abstract:

The UK House of Lords was seen as outmoded in 1909 and 1945, but it has gained prestige as its composition has become broader and debate is more civilised than in the House of Commons. The House of Lords has too little power to be a target for abolition, and there would be little public support for such a move. There is little logical reason for having the House of Lords, but it appears to function effectively and be more practical than other alternatives.
