Social bonds can withstand most bombs

Article Abstract:

The project coordinator of the domestic management of terrorist attacks programme at the Centre for Defence Studies, Kings College London, argues that it is not possible to counter terrorism targeted at a divided society by technical efforts alone. He contends that real resilience to terrorist acts can only come from a common purpose but, he argues, modern society is becoming more fragmented and less able to demonstrate a common purpose, so what is really needed is a change in the way modern society works if terrorism is to be effectively fought.

Cooking for terrorists

Article Abstract:

A writer and research fellow at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St. Andrews describes his dealings and interviews with terrorists from all political and social backgrounds. He argues that in order to understand terrorism, it is necessary to get close to the terrorists, quoting leading French terrorism expert Gerard Chaliand who stated that "You can only say that you are a specialist on a terrorist group if you have cooked for them".

...feel the values of my institution are a bulwark against the bombers

Article Abstract:

The Dean of Law and Social Sciences at the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) analyses the impact of the terrorist bombing which hit London, UK, on 07 July 2005 and argues that multicultural institutions such as Soas provide a valuable forum for the study of world culture and politics. It is contended that institutions such as Soas are important because they help prevent the cheap exploitation of both the humane and the sacred by fundamentalists.
