Advice for university lecturers on how to teach their freshman students how to read effectively and distinguish between useful and useless material. Tips include, acknowledging that reading techniques exist and need to be taught; addressing the issue of effective reading early on; stressing the importance of reading critically rather than reading in quantity; and admitting that some texts are just unreadable.

Advice for academics and college faculty on how to improve their work-life balance. Tips include being assertive about your needs and requirements, accepting help from family, friends and colleagues, working out what sort of work-life balance you want, finding out what options are available, and not expecting to immediately achieve the perfect balance between work and life.
