Strathclyde's champion calls the tune

Article Abstract:

Willie McCallum, a management accountant in the finance office at Strathclyde University, has been named by the university as Strathclyder of the Year for 2005. The university bestowed the honour upon McCallum for his contribution to Scottish culture as a result of his skills with the bagpipes. McCallum has won the world championship Glenfiddich piping title seven times.

Hawking, Gorbachev, Said... and Kapranos

Article Abstract:

Alex Kapranos, leading singer of Glasgow indie band Franz Ferdinand, took part in the Edinburgh Lectures on 02 February 2005. The lecture launched Edinburgh's Institute for Music in Human and Social Development, which aims to bring together researchers from music, physics, medicine, informatics and psychology to explore the role that music plays in our lives.

The phenomenon of Scotland's two-decade domination of the detective novel is being investigated by US-based Clues: A Journal of Detection, whose executive editor is Margaret Kinsman of London South Bank University. A special issue on Scottish crime fiction will be guest edited by Dr Gill Plain, deputy head of the School of English at St Andrews University.
