Sun, surf and a deadly melanoma

Article Abstract:

Some experts have suggested the incidence of skin cancer in Europe is likely to increase due to Europeans being able to afford to visit hot countries and therefore increasing their exposure. Whereas in Australia the number of cases of skin cancer are beginning to fall, as Australians take more care to protect their skin. Some 270,000 cases of skin cancer are detected in Australia annually. A number of research projects into the treatment of skin cancer have been undertaken in Australia. Some scientists are trying to develop vaccines whilst others are looking at anti-angiogenic agents.

Learning a new body language

Article Abstract:

New research by scientist Polly Matzinger challenges the traditional understanding of the immune system. Traditionally, the immune system is based on recognition of 'self' and 'non-self' cells. However, Matzinger suggests that the immune system is triggered by unexpected cell necrosis. Matzinger's theory provides answers to why the body does not attack fetal cells and tumour cells, which are, in effect, 'non-self' cells.
