Article Abstract:

There has been an increased focus on Black Britons in 1998 because it is the anniversary of the Windrush, a vessel which brought 492 Commonwealth citizens to the UK in 1948. The number of West Indians coming to the UK has since risen to some 500,000. Black people have been in the UK before 1948, but the Windrush voyage is seen as a milestone. There are concerns about how black people are portrayed in the media, and the extent to which they can gains access to the educational system. More black people are going to college, but there are not enough black graduate students and academics.

Diversity challenge

Article Abstract:

The Dearing report on higher education has highlighted the important issues in higher education in the UK in the 1990s. The issues are familiar to educationalists in other countries. Higher education in the UK has become a system for the masses rather than the select few, and the changing situation demands both more finance and more diversity of provision. The UK government must address these issues, bearing in mind the fact that the country needs to maintain international competitiveness in a world where knowledge has an increasing premium.
